What is Standard Form?

A way of writing very large or very small numbers as a × 10ⁿ where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is an integer.

Examples

4500 = 4.5 × 10³

0.0032 = 3.2 × 10^-3

Calculating in Standard Form

Multiply/divide the numbers and add/subtract the powers of 10.

Example: (2 × 10³) × (3 × 10⁴) = 6 × 10³⁺⁴ = 6 × 10⁷.

Example: (8 × 10⁶) ÷ (2 × 10²) = 4 × 10^6-2 = 4 × 10⁴.

Always check the final answer is in standard form (adjust if needed).
