Straight-Line Graphs and Gradient

The equation y = mx + c

m is the gradient (steepness - like how steep a hill is on your walk to school), and c is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis).

Gradient = (change in y) ÷ (change in x) = (y&sub2;-y&sub1;)/(x&sub2;-x&sub1;)

Example: Line through (1,3) and (4,9): m = (9-3)/(4-1) = 6/3 = 2. If it crosses the y-axis at 1, the equation is y = 2x + 1.
