Inverse Variation

Definition

y varies inversely as x means y = k/x, where k is the constant.

As x increases, y decreases so that xy = k (constant).

Example: y varies inversely as x. When x = 2, y = 12.
k = xy = 2 × 12 = 24
So y = 24/x
When x = 6, y = 24/6 = 4

Other forms: y ∝ 1/x2 means y = k/x2.
